The Berkel near Gescher / Ecology
In the section up to Gescher, there are still four larger dams that were also former mill sites. Other dams – such as at the former mill in Goxel – have since been removed. The dams – Ahlert Mill in Coesfeld, Kolves, and Hautmanns Mill in Coesfeld-Stockum, and Schulze Egberdings Mill in Gescher-Tungerloh-Capellen – are all used for electricity generation, thus renewable energy. However, this also brings conflicts with the permeability for fish migration.
In Gescher, the Berkel flows at the edge of the town and is very popular as a local recreation area – also due to the creation of an accompanying Berkel Lake. You can also walk directly along the Berkel in some places. At the end, there is again an old mill dam, which also serves for energy generation today. This facility has been newly built and is equipped with a "screw" that drives the generator instead of a turbine. Additionally, a fish ladder has been incorporated right at the new construction site.
