Schloss Chapel Horneburg

Description

In the document dated January 8, 1332, it was mentioned as a witness: Mr. Engilbertus, called Pastor von der Hornenburg (dictus de Hornenburg).[29] Here it was a phrase of modesty. Bernard of Clairvaux wrote: Bernardus, abbas dictus de Claravalle (Bernard, called Abbot of Clairvaux).[30]

In 1610, the church in Horneburg received the right to administer baptism, under Heinrich Barckhoff (approximately 1610–1650), who later became dean and vicar commissioner. Under this capable and energetic pastor, the church was rebuilt and expanded.[31] In the school that H. Barckhoff founded in 1610, he was initially a teacher for two years. He taught, among other subjects, grammar, Latin, and religion, but also provided an introduction to philosophy. He was kidnapped in 1632 by the Hessian troops and imprisoned for three weeks in Dorsten in 1635. In the same year, he was appointed pastor.[32]

In 1672, the church received unrestricted parish rights. Until 1965, it was the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene, and since 1968, it has been the church of the Russian community of Saints Boris and Gleb.

The church is single-naved, with two bays and has a flattened five-eighths apse. It is 17.7 m long and 9 m wide. The nave and choir are supported by buttresses. At the west of the roof sits a slate-covered bell tower that carries three bells. The interior of the church is covered with cross vaults resting on ribs between round-arched cross beams and on consoles, some adorned with angel heads. The windows are pointed arch, three-part, and feature heavy masonry from 1654 that is patterned in fish bubble form.

The church is equipped with a baroque altar. The heavy framework of the high altar, with acanthus tendrils and putti, as well as a depiction of the penitent Mary Magdalene from the late 17th century, enclosed a crucifixion group in the middle. Today, Mary and John can be seen in the Vestisches Museum, Recklinghausen. This was replaced by a Sacred Heart statue, after 1925 by a painting of Mary Magdalene, Mary, and John under the cross (currently in the new church), and finally by a Byzantine Pantocrator. On the left side of the altar area is a Rococo sacrament niche made of sandstone, a wall tabernacle from the 17th century with a panelled wooden door between stone pilasters. Surrounding it is cartouche work with angel heads. The baptismal font dates from 1618. It is a round basin with a leaf frieze and an angel head. The statue of Anna Selbdritt is made of oak and dates from the 15th century. Its painting has been renewed. The baptismal font and Anna Selbdritt are currently in the New Church.[33]
