The plain, cross-shaped brick building was constructed from 1690 to 1715 under the direction of the Amsterdam architect Arnold van der Leen, standing freely on the central Geistmarkt. Financing was contributed not only by the congregation of about 500 souls but also through collection trips to the Netherlands and a lottery approved by the Prussian king. On Palm Sunday, April 14, 1715, the church was consecrated.[1] The church, with a square floor plan and steep hipped roofs, is topped by an octagonal lantern. Low extensions are located at the corners of the cross arms. This is a preaching church with Dutch influence; the immediate model was the older Oosterkerk in Amsterdam, after whose plans it was built.[2]
In a fire on July 19, 1907, the church burned down to its foundations. Reconstruction took place until 1909. After destruction during World War II on October 7, 1944, the exterior was restored to its original form by 1958. It has only been called Christuskirche since this time.[1] The interior was modified by dividing it into two levels. The worship area is located on the first floor while the community hall is situated on the ground floor.[3]
