After the war began, prisoners and civilian forced laborers from the occupied territories worked in businesses and agriculture in Dorsten. More than 35 camps are established in the current city area. At the camp by the lock, the first 1000 Soviet prisoners of war arrive by the end of 1942. The city of Dorsten is instructed to immediately create a cemetery "for about 2000 Russians," which is established at this location. Many die shortly thereafter from exhaustion, from inhuman working and living conditions; some are beaten or shot. Although they face severe penalties, several residents of Dorsten secretly provide food to the Ostarbeiter, labeled by the Nazis as “Slavic subhumans.” We must not forget them!
