The air rescue center in Rheine has been in existence since 1982. Initially operated by the Bundeswehr with a SAR helicopter Bell UH-1D under the call sign SAR 76, the station was taken over by ADAC Luftrettung in 1998. Due to its proximity to the Dutch border, the "yellow angel" was given the call sign "Christoph Europa 2". It is the second rescue helicopter to use the name addition "Europa". This is intended to clarify that helicopters in border areas do not stop at national borders and can also provide care for patients in neighboring countries. Meanwhile, there are already five rescue helicopters with this addition in their radio call signs.
