The Püttchen was once used as a spring and drinking place for livestock. Daily, farmers living in the vicinity of the forest drove their pigs, cattle, and horses into the woods, where they ate acorns, beechnuts, wild herbs, and young tree shoots. This had consequences: because the livestock grazed on the young shoots, few new trees developed, and the forest became increasingly sparse.
