The oldest operational windmill in the Herrlichkeit was the charming Hemming's Mill near the village of Hervest. It was built as a windmill in 1864.
Later, a steam engine was used as the driving force, which was replaced by an electric motor in 1927. However, until the year 1940, the sails could still be set to the wind in favorable weather. But then they also succumbed to rigidity, remaining a decoration of the mill and the village for a few more years until they had to be removed in 1952 along with the entire exterior work.
Once upon a time..., we children looked in amazement at the pennants stretched from wing to wing, fluttering merrily in the air during processions and for the reception of the bishop, wondering how the clever windmill operator had done it. Once upon a time...
