On the Kerkberg in Heinsberg, about twenty kilometers from both Sittard and Roermond, lies the Sint-Gangulfuskerk. The nickname of this large church is 'Selfkantdom'.
Before this church was built as a jewel of Heinsberg, there was an eleventh-century basilica. The Romanesque crypt of this basilica is still located in the current church, dedicated to the saint and martyr Gangulfus.
You can also see relics of Saint Hedwig of Andechs there. Not only does the church of Heinsberg carry a lot of history, but so does the rest of the German town.
More history can be found on the other parts of the Kerkberg, where remnants of medieval fortifications are visible, as well as bastions from the mid-sixteenth century.
Looking down towards the Hochstraße, you can see the whitewashed bricks of the former Baroque deanery.
