The village of Pfalzdorf, part of the municipality of Goch in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, was founded in the 18th century by a group of partisanswho wanted to travel to America via the Netherlands. Less than 10 kilometers before the border, they were refused passage through local areas. In 1741, with strict regional building regulations, the municipality of Goch gave them permission to settle on the high moorland. The village is sparsely built-up and has long straight roads. Between 1880 and 1992 the village had a stop on the railway line from Köln to Kranenburg (near the border near Nijmegen).
