The town is located in Upper Lusatia south of Bautzen on Federal Road 96, which runs through the western part of the town. Weigsdorf-Köblitz is situated at the western entrance of the Cunewalde Valley between Halbendorf in the west and Cunewalde in the east. The Cunewalde River flows along the northern edge of the town towards the Spree. In the Weigsdorf district, there is the Matschenberg, also referred to as Matschen, as well as the Weigsdorfer Berg.
In 1939, the municipality had 875 inhabitants; by 1946 – following the influx of refugees from the former eastern territories – it had already increased to 1,095. During the GDR period, the population rose due to industrial development and the construction of a prefabricated housing estate, reaching nearly double by 1990.
