The observatory "Bruno-H.-Bürgel" Sohland/Spree is located in the south of the district of Bautzen in Sohland on the Spree on the Hohberg and is named after the "worker astronomer" Bruno H. Bürgel.
In 1953, Friedrich Uhmann, Edmund Grundert and Heinz Klötzke from Sohland began to build a Newtonian reflecting telescope in the workshop of the Schickanz company during their spare time.
After a favourable observation site had been found, a domed building for the instrument was erected free of charge by local craftsmen in a three-year construction period. The inauguration took place on October 13, 1963.
