Oflag IV-D was a camp for officers who were prisoners of war from 1940 to 1945 in Germany. It was located on the territory of the municipality of Elsterhorst, 50 km northeast of Dresden and 4 km from the small town of Hoyerswerda in Saxony, on the border of Silesia. The camp had 2,500 officers with their orders.
The number of prisoners in the camp varied between 5,437 in June 1940, 4,054 in 1943 and 5,992 in January 1945. Due to the bombing of Dresden, the German authorities evacuated the camp from 17 to 19 February 1945. Some prisoners who remained in Elsterhorst and Zeithain were liberated by the Soviet army between 19 and 22 April and repatriated via Odessa.
