Helmsdorf is a district of the town of Stolpen and belongs to the district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains.
Helmsdorf is named after a locator named Helwig. It was first mentioned in 1247 as Helewigesdorf. Here, the Hussites camped at the mouth of the Katharinenwasser into the Wesenitz during their invasion of Saxony. In 1559, there was a manor village and a demesne. Both became part of the electorate of Saxony. Two villages developed: Oberhelmsdorf and Niederhelmsdorf. The St. Catherine's Church, first mentioned in 1473, stands in Oberhelmsdorf. It was modified in 1846 in the classical style. The organ was created by Wilhelm Leberecht Herbrig in 1848. After a fire in 1969, the instrument was handed over to the church of Langenhennersdorf before the reconstruction of the church, which has been reduced in size, in 1971.
