Helmsdorf is een deelgemeente van de stad Stolpen en behoort tot de Landkreis Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge.
Helmsdorf is vernoemd naar een locator Helwig. Het werd voor het eerst vermeld in 1247 als Helewigesdorf. Hier kampeerden de Hussieten bij de monding van het Katharinenwasser in de Wesenitz tijdens hun inval in Saksen. In 1559 waren er een ambtsdorp en een voorwerk. Beide werden kursassies. Er ontwikkelden zich twee dorpen: Oberhelmsdorf en Niederhelmsdorf. De in 1473 voor het eerst officieel vermelde St.-Katharinenkerk staat in Oberhelmsdorf. Deze werd in 1846 in classicistische stijl veranderd. Het orgel werd in 1848 gemaakt door Wilhelm Leberecht Herbrig. Na een brand in 1969 werd het instrument in 1971 voor de herbouw van de verkleinde kerk in de kerk van Langenhennersdorf afgegeven.
