The Elster School Center in Elsterwerda is located in the West district of the small town of Elsterwerda in southern Brandenburg. The school has become known nationwide and internationally primarily due to the sports ensemble and the school circus Robbi based there. According to its own statements, it is the only regular school in Germany that offers circus as an elective subject.
In the center of the Elsterwerda-West district, the Elster School Center can be found. The school was built between 1967 and 1968 as a type school in panel construction due to new housing development. On September 1, 1968, the new school building, equipped with 28 classrooms, a gym, and a dining room, was inaugurated in the presence of the then city mayor Felix Kocksch and the district school councilor Egon Langer. Initially, 34 teachers were employed at the Polytechnic Secondary School. The first director was Werner Neißner. In the school year 1968/69, 607 students were taught in 20 classes. The school was named after Johannes Dieckmann on September 27, 1969, in the following year. The former journalist and liberal-democratic politician had died earlier that February. From 1973, the Walter Husemann School on Schillerstraße functioned as a branch of the school, which had until then been attended by a large number of students from the district and now only offered grades 1 to 4.
