Description

The Börnicke concentration camp was an early German concentration camp during the time of National Socialism. It was established in May 1933 by the Sturmabteilung in a former cement factory in Börnicke near Nauen. After the transfer of power, the SA-Standard 224, based in Nauen, initially operated a military sports school here. Later, it began to be used as a so-called "wild" or "early" concentration camp. The inmates were predominantly communists and social democrats from the East Havelland district, who were forced to work on road construction and forestry. SA men murdered at least ten inmates. Others died as a result of the inhumane treatment and poor provisions. One of the detainees was the Falkensee worker athlete Oskar Sander. In July 1933, 79 prisoners were transferred to the Oranienburg concentration camp. Börnicke then became an external command of the Oranienburg concentration camp with about 15 inmates.
The Prussian state government investigated the events at the camp in the summer of 1933. As a result, the camp commander Heinrich Krein was arrested on September 28, 1933, and sentenced by the Berlin District Court on August 14, 1934, for the rape of a communist. The actual events in the camp went unpunished.
