Gut Schmerwitz

The Schmerwitz Estate with its manor house or Schmerwitz manor, which the locals call Schmerwitz Castle, is located in the Schmerwitz district of the municipality of Wiesenburg/Mark. The estate, which is classified as an architectural monument, consists of a baroque castle-like manor house, the Schmerwitz manor church, an administrator's house, a fire station, stables and barns.
In the Middle Ages, Schmerwitz was a desert and was part of the Wiesenburg lordship. In 1575, the Schmerwitz farm was used as a sheep farm. In the course of two inheritance divisions, Schmerwitz was separated from Wiesenburg in 1697. Five years later, the Brandt von Lindau family's ownership of the Wiesenburg and Schmerwitz lines was established in a settlement. In 1730, Colonel August Friedrich Brandt von Lindau abandoned his residence in Zerbst and settled permanently in the Schmerwitz manor. In 1736, he had it transformed into a representative residence. In the 19th century, the manor house was considerably extended in the neo-baroque style.
