Karlstein is a village in the market municipality of Regenstauf in the district of Regensburg in Bavaria. Until 1978, Karlstein was the seat of the municipality of the same name.
The name of the locality may be derived from the castle of Chadolth. The first lords of Karlstein were the Hofer von Lobenstein. Before 1381, the property was mortgaged to the Leuchtenberg family, who reconstructed the castle in 1393. Originally, the medieval castle Karlstein stood here, which was completely rebuilt by the present castle structure from the 16th and 19th centuries.
