Description

The Wüsteneutzsch lock staircase or Wüsteneutzsch lock ruins is an unfinished lock staircase with originally two lock chambers near Kreypau, a district of the town of Leuna in the Saalekreis district in Saxony-Anhalt. The village of Wüsteneutzsch has belonged to Kreypau since 1951.

On 16 November 1920, the construction of the Elster-Saale Canal was decided in an intergovernmental agreement. In a state treaty concluded on 26 July 1926 for the completion of the Mittelland Canal, the simultaneous start of construction and completion of this waterway, also known as the south wing of the Mittelland Canal, was expressly stipulated.
On 11 July 1933, work began on the canal near Burghausen. To overcome the difference in height between the canal and the Saale, a lock staircase with two locks was planned at Wüsteneutzsch. The locks were planned as economy locks. The lock chambers were to have a length of 85 metres, a width of 12 metres and a sill depth of three metres and would thus meet the requirements for the lock of ships with a carrying capacity of up to 1000 tonnes, which roughly corresponds to today's inland navigation class IV.
