Sangerhausen is referred to as an oppidum in the year 1194, and a city wall can be documented for the year 1263. When the first town hall was built is not known. The current building has two significant construction phases. It was constructed between 1431 and 1437 and was supplemented in the second half of the 16th century with an eastern extension. This resulted in a rectangular building made of Rogenstein with deep cellar facilities, two main floors that can be accessed via a grand staircase, and several attic floors. The Baroque cupola with its octagonal lantern indicates later remodeling. The eastern gable features flat segmental arch panels.
The town hall is situated between the market and the corn market, north of the castle, on the eastern side of the market. On the facade, there is a head called Roland. It is conceivable that it is the remnant of a Roland statue. The town hall is listed as a historical monument and is registered in the monument directory under the number 094 30459. The building also houses the council cellar and, since 1874, the registry office; to the west of it stands the market fountain.
