The locality is one of 17 districts of the market town of Eckental, located in the northeastern part of Middle Franconia. It is situated about three kilometers north-northeast of the town center of Eckental and lies at an elevation of 319 m above sea level.
During the early Middle Ages, there was a now-disappeared castle site where Frohnhof is located. The establishment of the village likely occurred between about 1050 and 1100, when the region was developed and settled by Bavarian settlers coming from the south. During the late Middle Ages, Frohnhof came into the possession of the Imperial City of Nuremberg, thus belonging to the so-called Old Landscape. In administrative terms, the Imperial City assigned the locality to its care office of Hiltpoltstein, established in 1503, which also exercised high jurisdiction. However, the village and community lordship was alternately exercised by the Nuremberg Holy Spirit Hospital's office and the imperial barons of Egloffstein-Büg. A significant change for Frohnhof occurred in 1806 when the Imperial City of Nuremberg was annexed by the Kingdom of Bavaria, violating the imperial constitution, along with its remaining land area. Together with the remaining area of the care office of Hiltpoltstein, Frohnhof thus became Bavarian.
