The municipality is located six kilometres east of Hitzacker, on the opposite bank of the Elbe River at the mouth of the Löcknitz River, in the Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve in Lower Saxony.
For the year 1848, it is indicated that Wehningen had 23 residential buildings, in which 181 inhabitants lived. For the noble estate of Wehningen of the von Bernstorff family, there were nine residential buildings with 123 inhabitants. At that time, the village was a parish seat and had a school. On 1 December 1910, Wehningen had 248 inhabitants in the district of Bleckede and 114 inhabitants in the district of the estate. As part of the territorial changes of Mecklenburg, Wehningen was incorporated into Tripkau on 1 July 1950. After German reunification, the village was transferred from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to Lower Saxony, in the district of Lüneburg, on 30 June 1993. On 1 October 1993, Tripkau and Wehningen were incorporated into the municipality of Amt Neuhaus.
