Griesheim is located in the Ilm Valley between Stadtilm and Gräfinau-Angstedt at an altitude of about 370 meters. 3 km southeast rises the 582-meter-high Singer Berg. West of the village edge begins the gateway to the foothill landscape towards the Thuringian Forest and the course of the Federal Highway 71.
The Franks, who ruled in Thuringia, founded fortified settlements on their eastern border opposite the Sorbs on the Saale and Ilm rivers. Many such places received the suffix -heim. Griesheim was first mentioned between 1079 and 1089. The name of the place is derived from the settlement on sandy soil, known as the Griesheimer Sand. There were successively the spellings Grysheim, Grizheim, and Griesheim. Since 1133, the Lords of Griesheim, who were also the founders of the church mentioned for the first time in 1119, have been documented. They were relatively independent vassals of the Counts of Schwarzburg and built their castle on the Kirchberg. In its place, under Christian August of Lindenfels around 1735, the Baroque-style Griesheim Palace was constructed.
