The village is located about nine kilometers southwest of Coburg on a ridge between the west-located Seßlach in the Rodachtal and the east-located Großheirath in the Itzgrund. The stream Krumbacher Graben flows through the village.
Gossenberg has existed since at least the 9th century, but is likely to have been established much earlier. The first written mention was in a document from 1139, in which a Hartmut of Gossenberg is mentioned as a witness for the Banz Abbey.
