The village of Reiser is a district of the municipality of Unstruttal. The locality, with about 411 inhabitants, is located in the Thuringian district of Unstrut-Hainich, about three kilometers north of the district town of Mühlhausen in Germany.
Reiser lies idyllically in the valley of the Unstrut. In the immediate vicinity are the nature reserve Flachstal, an elongated dry valley, and the landscape protection area “Reiserscher Hagen,” which was established around a meander of the Unstrut River. The village itself consists primarily of several closed farmhouses built in half-timbered style, which group around the Protestant church in the center.
The old village center was established in the Unstrut floodplain on the high bank of the river at an elevation of 235 m above sea level. The surrounding Muschelkalk hills rise up to the 336 m high Goldberg in the northeast, within the locality’s territory. The Unstrut has carved into the morphologically hard Muschelkalk between the neighboring village of Dachrieden and Reiser, creating river meanders, known as valley meanders. The valley slopes are steep and end in a flat river floodplain that is up to 150 m wide. They are partly wooded or characterized by bushy pastureland. The Muschelkalk hills are intensively used for agriculture. In the southeast, there is also a large-scale fruit plantation. The old designation "Weinberg" north of the village indicates the former viticulture in the Unstruttal near Reiser.
