Forests with gorges between Wartburg and Hohe Sonne

The nature reserve "Wälder mit Schluchten zwischen Wartburg und Hohe Sonne," designated in 2015, is located in the area of the independent city of Eisenach and the municipality of Gerstungen in Thuringia. It had previously existed since 1961 as the nature reserve Wartburg - Hohe Sonne.

The only nature reserve in the city of Eisenach extends south of the core city of Eisenach in the natural area 1.3.1 Northwest Thuringian Forest. A small part of the area lies within the district of the local part Wolfsburg-Unkeroda of the municipality of Gerstungen. The protected area is situated on both sides of the federal road 19, which crosses the ridge of the Thuringian Forest here in the section between Wilhelmsthal and Eisenach. The federal road 84 runs northwest of the area. The nature reserve includes the UNESCO World Heritage site Wartburg, and at the intersection of B 19 with the Rennsteig lies the namesake Hohe Sonne.
