El área natural protegida de 2015, "Bosques con desfiladeros entre Wartburg y Hohe Sonne", se encuentra en el territorio de la ciudad libre de Eisenach y el municipio de Gerstungen en Turingia. Anteriormente, ya existía desde 1961 como el área natural protegida Wartburg - Hohe Sonne.

La única área natural protegida en el área de la ciudad de Eisenach se extiende al sur del núcleo urbano de Eisenach en el espacio natural 1.3.1 del Bosque de Turingia noroccidental. Una pequeña parte del área se encuentra en la parcela del distrito de Wolfsburg-Unkeroda del municipio de Gerstungen. El área protegida se sitúa a ambos lados de la carretera federal 19, que aquí cruza el crestón del bosque de Turingia entre Wilhelmsthal y Eisenach. Al noroeste del área transcurre la carretera federal 84. En el NSG se encuentra el Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la UNESCO Wartburg; en la intersección de la B 19 con el Rennsteig se halla la Hohe Sonne, que da nombre al lugar.
