In the sand near Rotenburg is the name of a former gravel extraction area in a river floodplain of the Middle Fulda Valley. After the gravel extraction was completed, the site was designated as a nature reserve along with the adjacent areas. The protected area includes the resulting gravel pond, an old water arm of the Fulda with a population of water lilies, softwood floodplain forests, reeds, tall herbaceous communities, succession areas, fallow land, and grassland.
