The district of Augustendorf lies about four kilometres east of the main town of Gnarrenburg. Southeast of Augustendorf lies the 1373-hectare Huvenhoopsmoor nature reserve with the Huvenhoopssee. The Augustendorf Canal, built in 1852, runs through the local area.
Augustendorf was founded in 1828 by Johann-Nicolaus Witte, a successor to the moor colony councillor Jürgen Christian Findorff. Until about 1925, the main source of income for the citizens was the mining of fuel peat. Of the original 40 full-time farms, five still exist.
