The earliest surviving mention of the place name Crumbach can be found in a document dated 29 September 1305: Otto von Crumbach and his sons Heinrich and Arreus and their heirs sold their bailiwick in the village of Höchst and the villages belonging to it with all their goods and rights. It is disputed whether the Crumbach named in the document is the village of Mümling-Grumbach. However, Mümling-Grumbach as the seat of the Lords of Crumbach is supported by a document from 1314. At that time, Otto von Crumbach had died. On 5 January 1314, his sons Heinrich and Arreus sold their bailiwick in Hoeste and all the villages belonging to it to the monastery of Höchst for 250 pounds heller. The sale is confirmed in a document dated 11 March 1314. It lists all the places that belonged to the bailiwick of Otto von Crumbach. They are Höchst, Crumbach, Ober-Höchst, Dusenbach, Pfirschbach, Annelsbach and Hummetroth. Accordingly, the bailiwick formed a closed district around Höchst. To exclude Mümling-Grumbach from this self-contained bailiwick as the seat of Otto von Crumbach and to replace it with the Franconian Crumbach in the Gersprenztal would contradict the meaning of the document. Mümling-Grumbach was certainly the centre of the bailiwick of Heinrich von Crumbach, named after him.
