Forstel is located in the northern Odenwald. Near the village, the border runs from the basement rock to the covering rock, which is why numerous natural resources occur here. In earlier times, among other things, hematite and limestone were mined. The state road 3106 runs along the northern edge of the village.
The oldest recorded mention of the place dates back to 1200. The name at that time was Forstall. Forstel belonged to the rule of Breuberg and fell to the Grand Duchy of Hesse with it in 1806.
