Brake is a district of Bielefeld and belongs to the northeastern district of Heepen. Until 1972, Brake was an independent municipality in the Heepen office of the Bielefeld district.
The city of Bielefeld is not further divided into administrative or political units below the ten districts. Thus, districts in Bielefeld are only informal sub-areas, whose boundaries mostly refer to the area of a former municipality. However, for statistical purposes, Bielefeld is divided into 72 "statistical districts." The former municipality of Brake roughly corresponds to the statistical districts of Grafenheide, Welscher, and Lämmkenstatt, which today approximately define the boundaries of the informal district of Brake.
