Berensch-Arensch is located directly on the dike foreland. Forests, heathland, fields and salt marshes characterize the landscape. Numerous historic farms determine the townscape.
The communities of Arensch, Berensch, Cuxhaven, Döse, Duhnen, Groden, Gudendorf, Holte, Insel Neuwerk, Oxstedt, Ritzebüttel, Sahlenburg, Spangen, Stickenbüttel, Süder- and Westerwisch belonged to the Hamburg Amt of Ritzebüttel until 1864 and then to the Landherrenschaft Ritzebüttel. In 1926, the communities of Arensch, Berensch, Duhnen, Groden, Gudendorf, Holte, Insel Neuwerk, Oxstedt, Sahlenburg, Spangen, Stickenbüttel, Süder- and Westerwisch were merged into the Landherrenschaft Hamburg. With the Greater Hamburg Act of 1 April 1937, the municipalities of Arensch, Berensch, Gudendorf, Oxstedt, Sahlenburg, Holte and Spangen went to the district of Land Hadeln, administrative district of Stade in the Prussian province of Hanover.
