The community lies about three kilometres southwest of Anröchte on the Bundesstraße 55. The K 64 and the K 23 run through the village. The Sunderbach rises in Mellrich. Neighboring towns are Altenmellrich, Robringhausen, Anröchte, Uelde and Waltringhausen.
The first documented mention of Mellrich dates back to 1177, when Mellrich was an independent municipality in the Amt of Anröchte in the district of Lippstadt before 1 January 1975.
