Huntlosen

Description

The village received its name from the nearby river, the Hunte; "Los" means "piece of forest". The namesake Hunte flows along the eastern edge of the village. Beyond it lie the Osen Mountains.

The first documentary mention of the place is as Huntloun in the Lerigau in 827, while the church dedicated to Saint Briccius, which is now Protestant, is first mentioned around 1100. However, the Saint Briccius Church is said to have been built between 855 and 872. The Corvey Abbey in East Westphalia Höxter gave it along with the Meierhof half as a fief to Count Otto of Zutphen, after which the Counts of Tecklenburg succeeded him. From the old Corvey estate emerged the Huntlosen estate, with which the Tecklenburg lords again rewarded their knights, including the ministerial family Bernefuer, after which the Barneführer wood near Huntlosen is named. Later, the ownership of the estate changed hands multiple times.
