Fort Mariensiel was part of the fortification plan for Wilhelmshaven and served as a fort to protect the Prussian naval port in Wilhelmshaven. It is located in Mariensiel in the municipality of Sande, just outside of Wilhelmshaven, near the Maade and the Ems-Jade Canal.
The Maade forts Rüstersiel, Mariensiel, and Schaar were announced in the Wilhelmshavener Zeitung on August 4, 1876. Construction was completed in 1880. A newly built perimeter road connected Fort Mariensiel with the forts Schaar and Rüstersiel, and it was equipped with narrow-gauge railway tracks. Its route corresponds to today’s streets An der Vogelwarte, Dodoweg, and Kurt-Schumacher-Straße. During World War I, the Flak battery Roffhausen was located northwest of the facility. To the south was the Flak battery Sande, and to the east was the Flak battery Munitionshof.
