Wamge lies west of the main town of Attendorn and south of Listerscheid and Papiermühle in a side valley of the Ihne. The local mountain is the 419 m high Bausenberg.
Wamge was first mentioned in a document in 1379 as "to Waymbecke" and in 1386 as Wambecke. The interpretation of the place name as "bright, shining stream" refers to the Ihne, which flows north of the settlement. On 25 April 1411, Wilhelm Graf zu Limburg and Herr zu Broich sold his fiefdom of the tithes from the estates of Boikenboile, Werschede, Alverinchusen and Waymbeke to a citizen of Cologne.
