Carolinensiel

Carolinensiel is a district of Wittmund in the eponymous district in Lower Saxony. The name-giver of the sluice town and fishing village founded in 1730 was the wife, Sophie Caroline, of the town founder Georg Albrecht of East Frisia.

Carolinensiel is the northernmost district of Wittmund. It is located between Neuharlingersiel in the west and the eastern end of the East Frisian peninsula at Schillig. The distance to Wittmund to the south is 13 kilometers, where the Harle also originates. Carolinensiel lies at the lower reaches of the Harle, about two kilometers south of today’s mouth into the North Sea at Harlesiel. For a long time, the sluice gate of the Friedrichsschleuse formed the seaward end of the harbor of Carolinensiel between the two districts.
Carolinensiel is located west of the "Golden Line". This was established in the 17th century as the border between the Principality of East Frisia and the County of Oldenburg. Today it is the border line between the districts of Wittmund and Friesland. As a result, the former train station Carolinensiel, the eastern part of the outer harbor Harlesiel, and the airfield Harle belong to the district Middoge of the municipality Wangerland in the district of Friesland.
