The approximately 188-hectare area was placed under nature conservation in 2007 under the code number UN-056. It stretches southeast and east of the core town of Werne and south of Stockum, a district of Werne, along the Lippe. Not far south flows the Datteln-Hamm Canal, a little further south runs the L 736 state road.
