Already in the year 836, concurrently with St. Kastor on the other side of the Rhine, the first church was completed in Vallendar and consecrated by the Bishop of Trier, Hetti, under the patronage of the Roman catacomb martyrs and canonized saints Marcellinus and Peter. Little is known about this building. It was replaced by a new structure in the 13th century. The church was the center of the largest Trier parish on the right side of the Rhine. The original double-tower façade was replaced in 1501 by the present west tower. By the end of the 18th century, the church became too small and dilapidated; it was demolished except for the tower, and the current church was built according to the plans of the royal building inspector Johann Claudius von Lassaulx. The new church was consecrated on September 19, 1841. Today, it is the parish church of the same-named parish and forms, along with St. Peter and Paul in Urbar and St. George in Niederwerth, the parish community of Vallendar in the Diocese of Trier.
