The scattered settlement is located on a geest promontory about four kilometers west of Esens. Utgast also includes the residential areas Küsterei, Mimstede, Mosishütte, Pansath, and Plaggenkroog, which together cover an area of 760 hectares. A total of about 350 inhabitants live in Utgast.
Utgast has presumably been settled since the Iron Age. During the Middle Ages, the area of the present district was home to the Pansath monastery, which since 1421 formed a subsidiary of the neighboring Marienkamp monastery.
