From 1888 to 1952, the Trappist monastery of Maria Veen was a monastery of the Cistercians of the stricter observance in Maria Veen, municipality of Reken, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
Following the example of the Protestant workers' colony of Wilhelmsdorf of the pastor of Bodelschwingh, the parish administrator of Reken, Hermann Harrier, and the politician Max von Landsberg-Velen founded a Catholic workers' colony in 1888 and won a group of 5 Trappists from the monasteries of Oelenberg and Mariawald for the leadership through the mediation of the diocese of Münster. The superior of the convent, Father Anselm Ellering, gave the monastery the name Maria Veen, whereby Veen is the local spelling variant of Venn = French fagnes. The Trappists had fallen for in the diocese because they had already settled in the Darfeld-Rosenthal monastery at the beginning of the century before they were expelled by Prussia in 1825.
