The St. Vincenz Hospital was a hospital in the Essen district of Stoppenberg. It was affiliated with the Catholic Klinikum Essen, which had been part of the Contilia group since 2014. It was closed on December 31, 2020, and the specialized departments were relocated to the Philippusstift in Essen-Borbeck-Mitte.
The hospital had its historical roots in 1881, when the growing number of accident victims and lung-damaged individuals from mining in the Ruhr area made the establishment of a hospital in Stoppenberg essential. This task was undertaken by the Catholic parish of St. Nikolaus, which was able to open the new hospital in 1886. Initially, four sisters from the community of the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth in Essen took over the nursing care, at the urgent request of Pastor Peter Wilhelm Leonhard Hicken. In the early phase, all services of the hospital were provided free of charge; it was not until a year after the opening of the hospital that the first nursing fees were paid.
