Gahlen is a district of the Lower Rhine municipality of Schermbeck in the district of Wesel, with about 2200 inhabitants. The local area includes the villages of Besten, Bruch, and Heisterkamp.
The earliest known mention of Gahlen as "Ganlingas" can be found in the inventory of the Abbey of Echternach. It dates back to the year 787. The current place name Gahlen is derived from the resolution of this mysterious Latin name. In the written source, a Moselle Franconian scribe reports on the appointment of an administrator named Wundo "in pago Gesterean super fluvio Lippia in villa Ganlingas."
