Ottenstein is a village in the municipality of Ahaus, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, with a population of 3749 .
A castle was built in the village around 1319. The town was granted city rights in 1386. In the 16th century, Ottenstein was walled and moated. In 1589 and 1635, during the Thirty Years' War, the city was completely destroyed by sieges and subsequent catastrophic fires. In 1623 the city rights were revoked.
In the 18th century, the dilapidated castle was demolished, the stones were reused as spolia for the construction of St. George's Church.
