House Roland, also known as Castle Roland, is today a mansion of historicism in Düsseldorf-Rath, built around 1893 according to plans by the architect Edwin Oppler. Its predecessor, demolished in 1883, was a Renaissance or Baroque castle built from 1696 to 1706 that underwent several structural changes, especially in the 19th century. The castle, located on a gentle hill at Königsforst "Aap," was surrounded by Baroque gardens that were transformed and expanded into an English landscape garden by Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe after 1804. The facility has been a protected monument since February 1, 1988. Nearby, since 1909, is the Düsseldorf-Grafenberg racecourse, where the annual Castle Roland Race, endowed with the Castle Roland Prize, is held.
