Schönau is located in the northeastern part of the Eifel, about 5 km south of the center of Bad Münstereifel. The village is embedded in the natural landscape of the Nordeifel, around 3 km west of the Michelsberg in the valley of the Upper Erft. From the south, coming from Langscheid, the Dreisbach flows in.
Schönau belongs to the rain shadow area of the Osteifel and therefore only has average annual precipitation of 700 to 800 mm. While Schönau still lies in the lee during southwest weather conditions, this changes quickly with northern/north-eastern/eastern weather conditions. These winds push clouds against the Eifel, resulting in rainfall as relief precipitation. Heavy rainfalls and, in winter, snowfall are the consequences.
