Until 1915, Burgwaldniel was a municipality in the district of Kempen in the Prussian Rhine Province. It included the historic centre of Waldniel. Its territory now belongs to the municipality of Schwalmtal in the district of Viersen in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The municipality of Burgwaldniel included the historic centre of Waldniel within the medieval ramparts. In 1885, the municipality covered an area of 2.29 km².
