Grieth is an old fishing town located on the Rhine in Germany. The locality belongs to the municipality of Kalkar in North Rhine-Westphalia and has about 840 inhabitants .
The history of Grieth is clearly determined by its location on the Rhine. Since the thirteenth century, Grieth has been developed by the Dukes of Cleves into a fortified trading place with a port. They could make good use of their own city on the Rhine to have access to shipping traffic. The town of Rees, located seven kilometers diagonally opposite Grieth, was under the rule of Cologne. In 1254 Grieth was granted city rights and in 1472 customs and staple duties. Grieth became a member of the international trade association of Hanseatic cities. The name Grieth is derived from "Gritt", which means sand or gravel.
