If you thought that Baarle-Hertog is a curious piece of territory of Belgium because it is an enclave, then you should definitely get to know this narrow part of Belgium: the Vennbahn corridor which is only a few meters wide. The railway that lies on this narrow piece of Belgian territory was built by the Prussian state to quickly and easily transport coal and iron ore (1889). The Vennbahn connected the industrial centers of Aachen (Rothe Erde) and Luxembourg in the shortest possible way. After the war, the Prussian cantons of Eupen and Malmedy were annexed to Belgium under the Treaty of Versailles. As a result, the railway crossed the new border several times, requiring border checks each time. To remedy this problem, it was decided to allocate the railway bed, the stations and the technical installations in their entirety to Belgium. As a result of this transfer, four pieces of German territory were suddenly cut off from the motherland, they are exclaves to this day.
